Swamp Biome Print

Swamp

The Swamp biome covers an area of 150 kilometers, more than 1% of the national territory, consists mainly of savanna steppe flooded in the most part. The Pantanal is in only two Brazilian states, Mato Grosso occupies 7% of the territory and Mato Grosso do Sul 25%. The region is an alluvial plain influenced by rivers that drain the Upper Paraguay River Basin, where it develops a fauna and flora of rare beauty and abundance.

It also has predominantly sandy soils (hydromorphic Pdzól), coated with native forage. It holds about three million head of beef cattle and are created in extensive exploration on large estates, which makes farming his main economic activity for over 200 years. This traditional system of exploitation has led to external shocks that threaten biodiversity and, therefore, it puts at risk the sustainability of ecosystems of this vast plain.
